Anishinabek Nation Credit Union Scholarship

Sault College Bursary Award

The 35th Annual Sault College Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards Ceremony was held on March 18, 2008. Awards were presented to 246 students and $126,000 was distributed during an evening set aside for recognizing student achievement. Anishinabek Nation Credit Union was pleased to take part in the event for the second time by offering a scholarship to be awarded to an Aboriginal student enrolled in the Business Program who demonstrated academic success, future growth potential in their chosen field or who was interested in continuing their education beyond the college system.

This year’s recipient of the ANCU Scholarship was Ms. Patricia Nahwegahbow, a first year Business Student. “Students who are pursuing their goals and want to continue their education appreciate all scholarships and the generous donors who supply them” stated Ms. Nahwegahbow. Ms. Nahwegahbow was a multiple award winner, also picking up a scholarship from CTV Broadcasting.

“This bursary reflects the credit union’s commitment to post secondary education and to the next generation of business leaders”, stated Allan Moffatt General Manager of ANCU. “We plan to continue our support of Sault College and its students for many years to come.”

The Anishinabek Nation Credit Union is the first on-reserve credit union ever to be granted a charter by the Province of Ontario. It all began in 1994 when the Union of Ontario Indians first envisioned the possibility of a financial institution devoted to the needs of First Nations people in Ontario. In November 2001 the dream became a reality when the ANCU first opened its doors for business. Since then they have served over 1, 400 members, granted loans in excess of $6.0 million and serviced deposits of $8.5 million. The Deposit Insurance Corporation of Ontario insures all of the deposits with the credit union up to $100,000 per member.
